Right To Choose Programs Give Customers Options On Electricity Suppliers

In the past, most citizens were forced to purchase electricity from one company; there were no other options and no right to choose where one obtained electricity. The electric companies had a monopoly and the only other option aside from the local electric company was to install windmills or solar panels in the backyard. However, many states have gotten away from this ancient practice and are giving customers the right to choose which company will supply electricity to their home or business.

While this option is not yet available in all locations, it is becoming more readily available across the company. Consumers no longer are forced to purchase electricity from the main electric company in the area. Alternate suppliers are providing options to secure electricity. These suppliers may offer electricity from green sources, or they may offer electricity at a reduced cost. Some alternate suppliers do not own the local power lines that supply electricity to the area, so the cost may be slightly higher, but if a customer is passionate about sourcing electricity from an alternate supplier or supporting an eco-friendly supplier, it is worth the additional cost. The reasons to choose an alternate supplier are many, but many consumers like to be able to make their own choice. 

How to Find Options

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, a right to choose electricity suppliers program is typically only offered to customers who are served by an investor-owned electric company. Customers who are served by a municipal electric supplier, electric co-ops and electric providers that are government-owned typically don't have any other options when it comes to electric supply choices, but there are a very few of these companies that are located in an area served by alternate suppliers. If you are looking for alternate electricity suppliers in your area, a quick search online will likely yield the answers you need. You can also ask your local electric company if you have other options. The local utility commission in your area will also be able to provide this information to you.

The ability to choose your electricity supplier is fairly new and still hasn't spread to all electric customers across the country. Before you make a decision on which company to source your electricity from, it is important to research your choices fully so you can make an informed decision that is right for your budget and your lifestyle.
